Exquisite vintage 1920s burnout silk velvet flapper dress rendered in rich, inky black with striking tonal contrast. The design plays beautifully with texture and light — plush black silk velvet floral motifs bloom against a sheer silk chiffon ground that reads silvery gray in contrast, giving the surface a luminous, dimensional depth. This devoré velvet construction is a hallmark of high-quality Jazz Age eveningwear.
The silhouette is classic 1920s: a relaxed, drop-waist shift designed to skim the body rather than fit closely. The dress features softly rounded neckline, barely-there short sleeves, and a vertical front velvet panel extending from the neckline to the gathered drop waist. Delicate hand-applied beadwork accents this panel and continues gracefully toward the hem, adding subtle sparkle without overwhelming the design.
The skirt finishes with a dramatic asymmetrical scalloped hem, detailed with dimensional beaded velvet flower petals that move beautifully with the wearer — a particularly eye-catching and theatrical Jazz Age detail. A partially attached sleeveless sheer silk under-slip provides light coverage while allowing the velvet motifs to remain visually prominent. There are no closures; the dress slips on over the head.
Label: None
Content: Burnout silk velvet (devoré), sheer silk chiffon, glass beadwork, silk lining
Best Fit: Small/Medium – Medium
Underarms (Bust): 38"–39"
Drop Waist: 40"–42" (measured approx. 14.5" below underarm seam)
Hip: up to 48"
Length: approx. 42"–45"
Shown on dress form with 37" bust and 27" waist. Please note: 1920s dresses are designed with a loose, straight silhouette and are not meant to fit closely. For best fit, body measurements should be approximately 2" smaller than the garment measurements.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. Hand stitching is present beneath the left underarm/sleeve area. A small number of loose beads and flyaway threads are visible at the hem, consistent with age and wear to delicate 1920s beadwork. These issues do not detract from the overall presentation.
