Exceptional Antique Victorian Polonaise Dress, 1870s–1880s, Emerald Green Figured Silk Bustle Gown, XXS

Exceptional antique Victorian polonaise style dress dating to the late 1870s–1880s, beautifully crafted in a richly textured emerald green figured silk with woven floral striping throughout. The fabric has a slightly crisp, taffeta-like hand with a luminous silk finish, and the vertical striping elongates the silhouette in a very flattering, period-correct way. The fitted bodice is shaped with elegant princess seaming and fastens at the front with original gilt metal shank buttons set with pale translucent glass cabochons that take on a soft green cast against the emerald silk. The long sleeves are softly tailored and finished with gentle gathering at the cuffs.

The skirt is constructed in classic polonaise fashion, with the back of the bodice extending directly into the skirt and being permanently drawn up and swagged to create a sculptural bustle effect, complete with decorative tassel accents anchoring the drapery. The front skirt section is separate and fastens at the waistband with two hook-and-eye closures, allowing for ease of wear while the back remains structurally integrated. Inside, the bodice is fully lined in fine cotton with hand-set seams, and where visible the interior reveals the reverse of the figured silk, showing the contrasting woven striping.

Condition: Very Good / Wearable with Care
This dress presents beautifully and is in very good condition. The figured silk remains vibrant and substantial overall. There is some underarm discoloration and localized areas of silk weakening at the shoulders (most notable on FR) and near the front waistband. All noted wear is shown in the photographs. The dress remains structurally sound and displays exceptionally well.
