Edwardian Art Nouveau Brass Goddess Dress Belt, c. 1900–1915

Exceptional antique Art Nouveau dress belt dating to the Edwardian era, c. 1900–1915. Crafted in gilt brass with repeated goddess profile motifs, each rendered in high relief and framed by flowing whiplash lines and floral elements characteristic of true Art Nouveau design.

The female profiles feature softly modeled faces with elongated necks and expressive, flowing hair that becomes part of the surrounding linework — a hallmark of turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau metalwork influenced by French and pan-European design. The romantic profiles and fluid linework reflect the influence of French Art Nouveau design popular at the turn of the century. The openwork frames create negative space, giving the belt a sculptural look from every angle when worn.

The belt is constructed with linked decorative plaques joined by chain, fastening with an original bar-and-hook closure at the back. Designed to sit at the natural waist, this style of belt would have been worn over Edwardian lingerie dresses, cotton day gowns, and Gibson Girl–style blouse and skirt sets, as well as silk evening dresses, adding definition and decorative interest at the waist.

Best Fit: XS - 24 1/2" max waist.

Condition: Very good! Natural patina to the gilt brass consistent with age. Minor wear to the gilt finish at the neck of one front-facing goddess figure, visible upon close inspection. A prior reinforcement to the final chain link is present at the reverse, added to stabilize the connection; this does not affect function or display.
