Antique Late 1910s–Early 1920s Purple Velvet Dress with Sheer Cutout Sleeves & Velvet Waist Rosette, Medium

Striking antique late 1910s to early 1920s evening dress crafted in rich, crushed purple velvet with dramatic sheer chiffon sleeves and sculptural velvet cutout detailing. The color is a deep aubergine-purple that shifts beautifully in the light, with a soft, liquid velvet sheen.

The silhouette is relaxed through the bodice, blousing gently over the waist before falling into a long, softly draped skirt. The waist is defined by a braided velvet band that wraps the midsection and serves as the anchor for the sculptural velvet flower accent at the side. The sleeves are especially striking: sheer chiffon panels inset with vertical velvet cutouts. At the back of the skirt, a satin-lined panel or flap is incorporated into the construction.

The dress fastens with snap closures beginning partway up the left skirt, continuing across the midriff and up the left side of the bodice, and finishing at the left shoulder — a practical and period-appropriate closure system.

Condition: Very good antique condition overall.
Velvet presents beautifully with rich texture and luster; there is subtle pinkish tonal variation to the velvet, visible in certain areas and lighting conditions. This includes a soft tonal shift at the upper back and a small, localized tonal variation at the front skirt, visible on close inspection. These variations appear age-related and do not affect the integrity or wearability of the velvet.

The interior bust lining shows areas of tearing and wear, consistent with age and use. These areas are confined to the interior and do not impact exterior appearance or structure. Sheer chiffon sleeves are intact with expected delicacy for the period.

Structurally sound and displays exceptionally well.
