Antique Circa 1900 Cotton Calico Day Dress, Late Victorian Floral, Small

Antique late Victorian cotton calico day dress dating to circa 1900, beautifully made in a dark ground cotton printed with a fine, dainty floral motif. The bodice is detailed with narrow vertical tucks, paired with softly structured shoulders accented by arrow-pointed applied trim details and long sleeves gathered at the cuffs. A defined waistband with an applied self-fabric belt, also finished with arrow-pointed detailing, shapes the silhouette; the belt is pinned closed for display, as there are no original closures. The skirt falls into generous gathers, with tighter gathering at the back that creates a lovely sweep through the hem.

The dress features an interior under-bodice with button closures extending to the neckline. The outer calico layer fastens from the mid-waist to the neckline, a functiomal late Victorian detail that allowed the dress to be worn fully closed or slightly open depending on use. Extensive hand stitching is visible to the under-bodice at the neckline and to interior. Additional details include a modest collar, original buttons, and a small hip pocket trimmed to match the belt. Cotton calico day dresses like this were typical of practical late Victorian everyday and working wear at the turn of the 20th century.

This antique dress presents beautifully and is structurally sound. There are no notable fabric flaws observed to exterior. The interior cotton under-bodice shows two very small, faint discoloration spots, along with minor age-related wear to two interior buttons: one is a replacement, and one has some loss to its exterior surface color.
