Exceptional antique 1920s Jazz Age evening dress crafted in rich teal silk, lavishly decorated with gold floral lamé motifs that shimmer beautifully against the saturated jewel-tone ground. A striking and fluid example of true 1920s design, this gown is further elevated by its original label: J.M. Gidding & Co., New York • Paris • Duluth • Cincinnati — a respected early 20th-century retailer known for high-quality fashion and cosmopolitan influence.
The dress is sleeveless with softly scooped arm openings and a graceful V neckline, trimmed throughout with faceted crystal bead edging that catches the light with subtle iridescence. A distinctive diagonal beaded panel sweeps across the bodice, adding visual interest while maintaining the relaxed Jazz Age silhouette. Beneath the silk lamé overlay, a matching teal silk underlayer provides smooth coverage and enhances the depth and richness of the color.
The skirt falls straight and fluid from the hip, finishing with a dramatic side train that trails elegantly behind — a stunning detail that firmly places this piece in the realm of true Jazz Age eveningwear.
Labeled, and unusually generous in size for the era, this gown fastens with hook-and-eye closures along the solid silk underlayer at the left side waist, continuing up the side bodice and finishing at the top of the left shoulder. Snap closures also fasten up the left underarm edging of the silk lamé layer. The remainder of the silk lamé layer is unfastened and designed to float freely over the underdress, creating beautiful movement and drape.
Label: J.M. Gidding & Co. New York Paris Duluth Cincinatti
Content: Silk, metallic gold lamé, faceted crystal-esque beads
Best Fit: Large
Underarms (Bust): 42"
Drop Waist: 42"
Hip: up to 48"
Length: approx. 49" front; approx. 71" to back side train
Please note: 1920s dresses are designed with a relaxed, straight silhouette and are not meant to fit closely. For best fit, personal body measurements should be approximately 2" smaller than the garment measurements.
Condition: Very good antique condition. The outer silk presents beautifully with rich color and fluid drape and the gold lamé shows gentle age-related mellowing/tarnish consistent with early metallic textiles. Light underarm discoloration/ring shadowing is present. One very small tear is present at the underarm seam area. The separate solid silk underskirt/lining shows areas of sun fading; this is not visible from the exterior and cannot be seen when worn, but is noted for full transparency. Please review photos carefully, and email for additional images, as they form part of the description.
