Wonderfully made and authentic antique Edwardian dress dating to the early 1900s–1910s, almost certainly created for a formal costume ball or theatrical event. This extraordinary piece is labeled Mrs. Lambert Costumier, Huntingdon, a highly regarded English costumier known for producing elaborate, bespoke garments for society events, pageants, and stage wear during the Edwardian era.
The bodice features sheer black silk over pleated sections that extend from the shoulders down to the front and back waist, creating elegant vertical movement. At the center bodice insert and along the tiered sleeve hems, intricately embroidered spider motifs appear in metallic silver thread, worked onto squiggled black net — a striking and rare decorative theme that gives the dress strong visual impact and theatrical flair.
The sleeves are styled with an inner long sleeve of gray cotton is finished with embroidered net at the hem, topped by a shorter outer tier of sheer black silk layered over gray cotton and finished with a cuffed silk hem. A silk cummerbund defines the waistline and anchors the silhouette.
Interior construction is well executed. The bodice is fully lined and boned, with hand stitching throughout. An interior waistband is partially attached and fastens with a buckle closure designed to pierce through the cotton tape — a period method seen in high-quality costume construction. The skirt is composed of two layers: an interior glazed gray cotton skirt with a pleated hem, and a sheer black silk overskirt with gentle gathering at the back. The skirt and bodice attach at the waistband, with two hook-and-eye closures at the waist and additional interior hooks at the back bodice to secure the ensemble.
