Absolutely stunning vintage 1930s copper brown silk velvet bias cut evening dress, circa 1935. Luxurious silk velvet with a rich coppery sheen that glows beautifully in the light, cut on the bias for that unmistakably flattering 1930s silhouette — skimming the body, hugging the curves, and allowing ease through the hips. This dress has wonderful movement and drape, feeling fluid rather than restrictive.
Styled with a softly gathered neckline and a dramatic keyhole back opening, the bodice features fabulous open shoulder detailing that reads very Deco and fashion-forward for the mid-1930s. Long sleeves taper elegantly to the wrist and fasten with delicate button and loop closures. Sculptural Art Deco seamwork runs throughout the dress, continuing into the floor-length skirt which finishes with a subtly flared hem and diagonal Deco seam detailing.
A matching silk velvet fabric belt defines the waist and is finished with an Art Deco rhinestone-style paste jewel clasp, adding just the right amount of sparkle. There are no closures — this dress slips on over the head, so the wearer will need to be able to pull it on comfortably.
I previously sold this exact dress in sapphire blue — her twin — and a handwritten note referencing that piece is shown in the final image, adding a lovely touch of provenance and story to this exceptional gown.
Label: NRA Code (National Recover Act) - label used from 1933 - 1935.
Content: Silk velvet
Best Fit: XS–Small
Bust: up to 35"
Waist: 30" without belt; belt works for up to a 26" waist
Hip: up to 42"
Length: approx. 58 1/2"–60 1/2"
Sleeve Length (from underarm): approx. 18"
Fit notes: Bias cut allows for gentle flexibility through the body. This dress pulls on over the head and has no closures, so ease through the bust and shoulders is important when assessing fit.
Condition: Very Good. There is a darkened area to the velvet on the right side of the skirt; I believe this would likely respond well to a velvet needle board, as there is no corresponding water staining visible on the underside. The Deco belt is missing one of the longer paste jewels, and there is one missing velvet-covered button at the tapered sleeve hem. Despite these notes, the dress presents beautifully and remains striking in its current state.
