Authentic antique early 1920s velvet dress with striking sheer embroidered sleeves, capturing bold Jazz Age drama and transitional flapper styling. Crafted in rich cotton velvet, this dress features sheer silk georgette sleeves patterned with multiple strands of swirling, crimped blue silk embroidery, secured with metallic bullion thread for a sculptural, almost winged effect. The extended looped sleeve hems add further movement and visual impact.

The dress is styled with a softly rounded neckline and a drop waistline accented by a partially attached velvet waistband, embellished with strands of faceted black beads and larger medallion accents. The ankle-length skirt is finished with dramatic 15" slits at both the front and back sides, revealing matching blue embroidery on the skirt of the detached under slip beneath.

The velvet overdress fastens along the left side with button closures extending from the waist to the shoulder seam and continuing around the upper portion of the left sleeve. The under slip fastens at the back with snaps and additional hook and eye closures at and below the waistband.

Label: none

Bust: 34"
Waist: 26"
Hip: 44"

Overdress Measurements:
Bust: up to 40" (batwing-style bodice with no defined underarm seam)

Fit note: the velvet overdress can comfortably accommodate a Medium. The under slip, however, fits closer to a Small with a 26" waist. If the bodice portion of the under slip were reconstructed (see condition notes below), it could be made to accommodate a Medium.

Condition: Good, with the potential to be Great with some TLC to the under slip. The velvet overdress is in very nice structural condition. The primary issue is fading to the blue embroidery in areas. Additional minor issues include some hand stitching at the tops of the skirt slits, light velvet wear, and a few minor thread pulls within the embroidery.

The under slip is in fair condition but wearable with restoration. The shoulders show significant tearing to the silk and should be replaced. The cream silk bodice area has discoloration that is not visible when worn, along with spotting and uneven finishing at the grosgrain waistband, where three hook and eye closures are missing. The embroidered skirt portion of the under slip—visible when worn—is in very good condition and displays beautifully.
