Antique 1890s–1900s Blue Floral Print Cotton Day Dress, Victorian Edwardian Gigot Sleeve Gown, XS

Gorgeous antique late 1890s to early 1900s two-piece cotton day dress consisting of a fitted bodice and coordinating skirt. The striking floral print features vivid blue trumpet-shaped morning glory blooms set against a deep black ground, interspersed with delicate tan and white sprig motifs. The cotton fabric remains wonderfully vibrant and is backed with a soft flannel underside, adding warmth and structure typical of turn-of-the-century garments.

The bodice is beautifully styled with a split-front collared neckline trimmed in midnight blue cotton velvet, paired with a dramatic cross-over gathered velvet yoke that extends to the waistline. Large polished black cut shank buttons embellish the yoke — three at the right and two at the left — with closures at the side waist and upper left shoulder via hook-and-eye fastenings. Beneath the yoke, the bodice closes down the center front with seven mismatched buttons: five antique shank buttons, one with a missing face, and two brown vintage replacements at the lower front, all noted for transparency.

Full gathered gigot (leg-of-mutton) sleeves echo fashionable silhouettes seen in late 1890s fashion plates, while the bodice features a slightly extended, curved back waist with double pleating running from the nape to the waist for graceful shaping. The bodice is lined in blue calico cotton, with brown cotton lining beneath the velvet yoke overlay, and white cotton muslin lining the sleeves. Construction shows a mix of hand and early machine sewing, consistent with the period.

The matching skirt falls to ankle-to-floor length with generous gathering and a softly flounced hem, creating a lovely sweeping silhouette when worn. It fastens at the center back with a large hook and clasp, likely a period replacement.
